Works with Nest Going Away
From Control4:
As announced yesterday at the Google IO developer conference, Google is terminating the “Works with Nest” program on August 31, 2019. This program will be replaced by the new “Works with Google Assistant” program. Because of this change, for continued integration between Nest thermostats and the Control4 platform, projects that include a Nest thermostat will need to be updated.
Control4 is committed to fostering a large ecosystem of supported third-party devices. In the same way that we were an early adopter of the “Works with Nest” program, we are embracing the “Works with Google Assistant” program to provide customers flexibility to use their preferred products in their Control4 Smart Home.
What does this change mean to me?
Google is changing the way they authenticate their users. They are also using a new API, through which Nest thermostats will integrate with the Control4 platform. This new program will require a new Nest driver that authenticates using a Google Account instead of a Nest account.
Who is affected?
Any customer with a Nest thermostat or Nest Protect currently integrated into their Control4 home.
What are the important dates?
- Beginning June 25, 2019, you will no longer be able to add new Nest thermostats to Control4 projects using a Nest account.
- On August 31, 2019, all legacy “Works with Nest” integrations will stop working.
When will the new Nest driver be available?
We are currently working on a new Nest driver through the “Works with Google Assistant” program. Our intention is to make it available before the shutdown of the “Works with Nest” program, but it is dependent on the certification process. Stay tuned for details and dates.
Google will be sending a notice about this change to Nest customers. Control4 will also send an email to their customers in order to provide them with clarity about the migration path.
